Activities in Sweden
Stockholm Management Office (SMO)is the base for all activities in Sweden - management, administrative and operational support, fundraising and handling of information to members, media and the general public.
The Association
In 2006, SCA had about 3700 registered members, organised in 13 local branches across Sweden. Through the local branches, members are involved in information and fundraising activities, including study groups and seminars on Afghanistan, festivals, fairs and exhibitions, twin school projects, media events etc. All work is done on a unpaid, voluntary basis.
The new members are encouraged to be active and at the same time experience meaningful activities. With the involvment of the SCA local committees and members, the SCA field activities have been known among the Swedish public as cooperation built on solidarity.
Information activites
The management office in Stockholm directs efforts to alert the general public in Sweden about the situation in Afghanistan, thereby raising funds and popular support for SCA's programmes. Information is disseminated through active media relations, targeting TV, radio and press. Other information channels include:
• The SCA web site - in Swedish and English
• Afghanistan-Nytt - a member magazine, published four times per year
• Aryana - a newsletter distributed to sponsors twice a year
• Publishing and sales of books and other material on Afghanistan and SCA
• International seminars, exhibitions, internal and external lectures etc
Fundraising activites
The Swedish public play an important role for the organisation. Fundraising activities through SCA´s own fundraising are based on a number of regular campaigns targeting its own network of donors as well as the public. The campaigns focus on various themes, such as healthcare, disability and education. The fundraising activities are controlled by a special fundraising foundation. Fundraising activities include:
• The Swedish Afghanistan Aid carries out five campaigns per year under different themes, such as girls' education, bread and water, rehabilitation of mine victims, etc. When natural disasters occur, such as the earthquake in 1998 and the drought in 1999-2001, SCA is successful in raising funds for the victims.
• A fund for individual sponsorship, started in 1991, focuses on long-term support for two orthopaedic workshops and 25 schools in Keshim, north-eastern Afghanistan.
• Through the Twin School project, pupils in Sweden raise money to pay teachers' salaries, textbooks and other material in their Afghan twin school. Experiences are exchanged via letters and drawings.
• Through cooperation with a stock broker, 2% of private investments of the dividend go to SCA.
• The staff organisation of a large Swedish company contributes to a project for digging wells to get safe drinking water in villages in north-eastern Afghanistan.
• A telephone company, Wise Connection, gives 5% of its profit to selected NGOs, including SCA.
• "Children of the World" together with other organisations, SCA has for several years participated in the Radio Help campaign "Children of the World".
