Primary education

Guided by the SCA policy, the major component in SCA´s education programme is support to basic education in rural areas. SCA strives for support and quality improvement; in payment of teachers and school staff salary, provision of school materials, methods, monitoring, capacity building of teachers and construction of school buildings. Through close cooperation with the Ministry of Education and other actors in the field, and through investing in teachers' training, SCA is working to promote equal access and to improve quality on a national level. SCA supports and emphasises basic education in rural areas with particular focus on girls access to education. SCA Education Programme’s aim for 2006 and onward is to get more girls into school, ensure that they stay in school and that they are equipped with the basic tools they need to succeed in later life. SCA´s education strategy for primary education will from 2006 and onward concentrate on:
Community Based Schools (CBS)-The CBS programme initiated in 2005 and its aim is to provide children in remote rural areas, particular girls, with learning opportunities where no other formal schools exist. The idea of the programme is that it will use existing facilities in within the community like mosques and private homes to teach students. SCA´s education programme will provide basic teacher training and subject knowledge education to men and women from the community in order to serve as teachers. Alongside the teacher training SCA will also provide standard textbooks, stationary and teaching materials, as well as water and sanitation.
Model Schools- in order to strengthen the quality in primary education among SCA supported schools, SCA Model School Programme with focuses on girls’ education in the underserved areas. The model schools are functioning as demonstration sites or models for other schools in the area. The programme is designed to amongst other things; improve students’ achievements, monitor drop out and retention rates, enrich curriculum and education in health and nutrition, improve the school and classroom environment, involve parents and communities, etc. SCA supported model schools are planned to be twined with schools in Sweden and Britain.
Girls Annexes –girls annexes are schools which are annexed to boy school, however in separate locations. It is a solution for primary schooling in areas where access to education for girls is poor or where girls’ education in mixed schools is not accepted. SCA has 69 78 girls annexes in the south-eastern region and they will gradually through the years be integrated into the government system
