Special Education

The Special Education (SE) component of RAD enables children and adults with special needs to improve their communication. It also assists in the integration of disabled children into mainstream education by preparing children for normal school and by training special resource teachers.

SE provides services to the following groups:

1. Sign Language for people with hearing impairment.
2. Braille (tactile script) and mobility training for people with visual impairment.
3. Teaching of Activities of Daily Life (ADL) for people with mental retardation.

The special education component also trains school teachers of SCA supported schools and local government schools in special education skills, its own CRDW staff, community volunteers, family members of PwDs and others how to educate children with disability, and promote integration of children in need of special education to mainstream schools. Training materials such as Braille books are also produced by the programme itself

In 2006, 2 859 children and adults were helped with special education and 548 children were integrated into normal schools.
