SCA conducted a Drop-Out Study

September 5, 2007

Swedish Committee for Afghanistan (SCA) has conducted a drop-out study of Basic Education in 12 provinces of Afghanistan. Very few studies or research have been done about the nature, scope and causes of the drop-out phenomenon. The study addresses aspects of the drop-out rate in Afghan schools with children leaving schools before completion of a full school cycle.

The study is conducted by Mr Amir Mansory, Senior Education Advisor on Research and Quality Assurance at Swedish Committee for Afghanistan. The study gives insight and knowledge about the causes and consequences of the drop-out rate in Afghan schools. According to the study, the 7-8 % yearly drop-out rate at a primary level and higher retention rate of girls are promising findings, while, on the other hand, the high the high drop out rate in the lower primary levels and the high failure rate after 3rd grade are alarming.

The Country Director of Swedish Committee for Afghanistan, Mr Anders Fänge states: - Mr Mansory´s Drop-Out study, which gives some answers, hopefully constitutes the beginning of a wider and more in depth research of this problem. SCA has the intention of contributing further to research in the field of education and will share and disseminate its further studies and reports with all actors and concerned parties.
