Celebrating 25 years presence in Afghanistan

Mr Anders Fänge, Country Director of SCA: - By this month, SCA has had the privilege to work in Afghanistan for 25 years. It has been years of foreign occupation, war, disasters and tremendous human suffering with just a few glimpses of hope shining through now and then. The last few years have seen some improvement but huge challenges remains before peace and prosperity definitely are reigning and the battle for a better future is not yet over. For SCA it has been 25 years of hard work, and we, who are and have been working with SCA, in Afghanistan as in Sweden, have just one regret – that we have not been able to do more than what we actually done.

The work of SCA is an expression of the principle “people to people” which essentially means that the organisation is impartial and politically neutral and with the primary objective to work for the benefit of the Afghan people – especially for those who are the poorest and most vulnerable. And in doing this, SCA assists people not only with services but also for them to stand up for their rights as human beings and citizens of Afghanistan as those rights are described in the Constitution of the country and in the international conventions of which Afghanistan is part.

SCA has been in Afghanistan for 25 years and, while we fully respect and agree with that the Afghan people has to shape its own future, SCA’s plans for its future is simple. As long as we are needed and as long we are allowed to, we will continue to work with Afghanistan and its people for at least another 25 years.
