PRESS RELEASE
Nine midwifes trained by the Institute of Health Science (IHS).

April 5, 2006

The training of the nine midwifes was conducted by the Institute of Health Sciences (IHS) that is a standard institute in which midwives, nurses, physiotherapists and X-ray technicians are trained at the country level. The midwife students received a two years training funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and the training started in early 2004 and the students were trained by Institute of Health Science (IHS). They were selected from the catchments areas of health facilities in Wardak, Kunduz and Kabul and the selection of the students were based on agreed standard criteria approved by IHS criteria. Before the introduction of the course, a contract was signed between the candidate's husband/father, community representative and SCA. All the newly graduated midwifes will now go back to their home villages and work as midwives in their communities.

SCA is currently running two other Community Midwife Training Projects – one in Kunduz and one in Wardak, as a part of the Basic Packages of Health Services (BPHS) in cooperation with Ministry of Public Health.

The training of the first batch of CMW students, which comprised of 18 students, started in April 2004 and finished in November 2005. All the graduated midwives returned to their home villages and are deployed in the health facilities. Three of them, who were the outstanding students, joined the CMW training as trainers. The training of the second batch, which comprises of 27 students started in October 2005 and is ongoing.

Wardak Community Midwife Training

The training of the first batch comprising of 18 students started in November 2004 and will finish in May 2006. The training of the second batch, which comprises of 22 students started in July 2005 and is ongoing.
