PRESS RELEASE
SCA is implementing BPHS in Paktika Province

July 4, 2006

Swedish Committee for Afghanistan has signed a contract with Ministry of Public Health Services (MoPH) to implement BPHS in the South-Eastern province of Paktika.

Swedish Committee for Afghanistan will work as the implementing partner and service provider for Basic Package of Health Services (BPHS) in a cluster of six districts in Paktika: Matakhan, Sarhawza, Sarobi, Zerook, Gomal and Barmal. The BPHS project aims at achieving the national goal set up by MoPH of providing equitable health services and quality health care to the population of Paktika Province.

The major health problems in the cluster are obstetric related problems, tuberculosis, malaria, acute respiratory infections in the winter and diarrhoeal diseases, mostly amongst children, during the summer time.

Dr Ahmad Rahman, Senior Health Advisor comments about the Paktika BPHS project: - “Once more SCA proves its commitment and effective involvement in the reconstruction and development of Afghanistan. Applying the BPHS in Paktika province is a big challenge. Nevertheless, SCA staff has the experience and the capacity to meet the challenges and to satisfy the needs and expectations of the target population. The project has a number of initiatives and new interventions that will certainly induce strong impact on the health status of the population of that remote isolated province. Paktika project is among the first BPHS projects to apply the new complete version of the package, hence, the comprehensiveness and the new dimensions of this project”.

SCA will run a total number of six health facilities: one Comprehensive Health Centre Plus (CHC+), one Comprehensive Health Centre (CHC), 4 Basic Health Centres (BHS). The CHC+ will provide surgery services as well as comprehensive Emergency Obstetric Services (EmOC) and the remaining health facilities will provide basic EmOC services. There will be 50 health posts staffed with one male and one female Community Health Worker (CHW). This project is funded by the World Bank for 24 months (1st phase).
