Afghanistan – towards democracy?

Press Release, April 11, 2005

In October 2004 the Afghan people went to the polls to elect a President for the first time in history. Critics denounced the event a political charade, orchestrated by US interests in the country. The popular turnout did however manifest a widespread desire among Afghans to lift the country from a history of war and political chaos. In September this year Afghanistan plans to hold parliamentary elections, commonly regarded as a far greater challenge, not least to security. Afghanistan remains the largest opium producing country in the world and is still awash with warlords and factions loyal to the Taleban and al Qaeda.
