Disabled women and children a priority

Jalalabad, March 6, 2010

Breshna, 18, from Jalalabad was two years old when her family realized that she had polio. Due to her disability she has never been to a school, but she learned reading and writing from her younger sisters and brothers.
Despite her disability and the struggles in life she is a success story. Breshna learned tailoring at a vocational training of the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan.

Now she has her own tailoring business at her home and is voluntarily teaching other disabled in the business. She is a strong financial supporter of her family from the earnings she gets from sewing dresses for customers.

But not all disabled women and children are given opportunities to change their life. Rehabilitating persons with polio is one of the tasks under the Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) of the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan. CBR is a programme working for rehabilitating and empowerment people with disabilities at home and in the community. Through CBR, people with disabilities have access to education, public services and jobs.

On March 28-30 the Afghan CBR Network is holding a regional conference in Kabul on how to further empower women and children with disabilities.
