International Women’s Day in Afghanistan
Kabul, March 8, 2010

Today the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan celebrated the 8th of March “Women’s International Day” at all its 10 offices in Afghanistan. SCA has 5500 employees in Afghanistan, 1283 are women. At “Women’s International Day” they were given an appreciation letters for the hard work they carry out, especially in the fields.
The main target group of SCA is the rural population with particular focus on women, children and vulnerable groups such as people with disabilities. Women in Afghanistan suffer badly from insecurity and instability. According to a recent report published by UNAMA the main social problems of Afghan women are domestic violence, rape and abuses, abduction of young girls, humiliation of women by warlords and criminals, lack of gender balance, misinterpretation of religious values concerning women and deterioration of the role of Afghan women.
The appreciation letter says “The SCA board and management realize the difficulties women face in their daily work, especially those of you who carry out your duties in the field. Working in the humanitarian and development area of Afghanistan is highly demanding - especially for women. The 8th of March is the “International Women’s Day”, and SCA would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank you for your courage and valuable contribution in carrying out you very important part of SCA’s work.”
The letter is signed by SCA chairperson Ann Wilkens and Country Director Anders Fänge.
