Two SCA constructed schools
inaugurated in Sholgara

The Swedish Committee for Afghanistan handed over two newly built schools in Sholgara district of Balkh province on 6th of July 09.
The construction work of both schools, Bi-Bi Khadija Girls High School and Dawlatzai Primary School, started in the middle of 2008 and were completed within six months. Before the new buildings the students were studying under tents.
In the ceremony to handover the schools to the government and the people in Sholgara several high ranking governmental officials such as the representative of the governor, parliamentarians, head of the education department in Balkh, representative of Sida, key staff of SCA offices from KMO and its project office in Mazar and was accompanied by many more other high officials of the district. Students and teachers of the schools also participated in the event. The security in the area during the ceremony was tight.
The Bi-Bi Khadija Schoolhas eight classrooms and rooms for computer, library, principal, staff, store and school guards. Bi-Bi Khadija School has been selected as model school by the Education Unit of SCA and will be one of the SCA supported schools in Balkh province. Bi-Bi Khadija has a capacity of teaching 1000 students. Currently, the school has classes from grade 1 till grade 10 but there are attempts to increase the grades to 12 to make it a High School. Dawlatzai primary school has classes from grade 1 till 7 and 300 students.
All those who gave speeches emphasized on the value of education to all especially the new generation. The delegation from SCA had the opportunity to explain the activity of the committee in the field of education as well as in other sectors. SCA also expressed its commitment that it will continue its cooperation and support to the people in Afghanistan.
The schools are built through the new project initiated in the North in 2008, the Northern Development Project (NDP) with focus on education, construction work and rehabilitation of disabled. The construction of the two schools is funded by the Swedish International Development Agency, Sida,
Model schools: well equipped schools with all standard materials needed such as library, computer class room, laboratory etc. The model schools are resource centres to other SCA supported schools and governmental schools.
