The inauguration of the new Parliament
Information Coordinator, December 19, 2005
The 249 members of Parliament with 68 women met for the first time on Monday 19 December 2005. The inauguration of the Parliament is the last articles of the Bonn Agreement, which was signed in November 2001. After the Taliban fall Afghanistan has gone through many steps to reach this historical day today; the interim administration, the Emergency Loya Jirga (Grand Assembly), the transitional period, the Constitutional Loya Jirga, the Presidential Election in October 2004 and then finally the Provincial and Parliament election in September 2005.
Many challenges lies ahead for the new Parliament and from now on the main responsibility will be in the hands of the elected government, the parliament and the Afghans themselves to continue to bring durable stability to the afghan nation.
